Hinged Knee Brace: Plantar Fasciitis & Knee Pain

Knee Braces for Injury or Pain

There are many styles of braces on the market for your consideration . Each one is used for different injuries, conditions or situations.  Read below to learn more about the styles of braces available and what they are used for.

Knee sleeves

A very popular type of  support used to provide compression around the knee joint. This provides support and controls  pain and swelling.

Prophylactic braces

Prophylactic braces are used to prevent injuries and are often worn by athletes in high contact sports, such as football, to minimize the risk of  injury.

Unloader braces

Designed to relieve pain for those who have arthritis in their knees. The brace shifts the weight (“unload” it) from the damaged area to a stronger area.

Rehabilitative braces

Designed for stabilizing and supporting the knee, minimizing the risk of re-injury and aiding in post-operative recovery. This style brace is often used for ligament and tendon strains, patella realignment and for use after ACL, MCL, PCL, or LCL surgeries.

These are usually used for a period of weeks right after an injury or surgery. They keep the knee stable but still allow limited movement while healing.

Functional braces

These braces are designed to mildly compensate for a torn ligament.  Offering protection to the knee at low loads. This means that when a force is applied to a knee that is supported with a functional brace, it is more stable than without the brace.

How do I use a knee brace?

Knee braces should be used as directed by your doctor. When you wear the brace depends on what kind it is and what it’s treating. Some are worn all the time. Some are only worn during sports, exercise, or physical activity. You should check the placement of the brace during activities to make sure that it hasn’t moved.
