Do I need an ankle brace?

Ankle braces can be used in multiple situations.  For example, to treat acute injuries, pains or prevent an injury from occurring/reoccurring.

An ankle brace may be right for you, if you experience regular ankle pain from tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, have injured your ankle recently or are looking to prevent an injury.

How does an ankle brace work?

Ankle braces provide external support to limit excessive movements in the foot and ankle, such as inversion and eversion.

They in adaption to surfaces. Such as stepping wrong and loosing your footing on unstable ground.

Ankle braces also work to control biomechanical alignment of the foot and ankle while in motion.  They aid in resisting external forces on the foot/ankle and provides protective shock absorption for your foot.

Some conditions that may require the use of an ankle brace include the following:

  • Instability
  • Sprains
  • Post operative
  • Sports activities
  • Tibialis posterior dysfunction
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Prophylactic (preventative) measures
  • Drop foot

What types of ankle braces are available?

The main types of ankle braces include: Soft, semi-rigid and rigid.  The type of ankle injury will help in determining what type of brace may be best for you.

Soft braces/supports – These are typically made of neoprene or elastic.  They are used for mild support and to help keep the joints, ligaments and muscles warm. This can aid in helping to keep the ankle from stiffening up during activity. They also provide mild compression for swelling.

Semi-rigid braces – This style of brace is the most common used today. Their lightweight, breathable, lace up design are perfect for the athletes. They are highly recommended by many doctors for mild to moderate support. Some styles also have extra velcro straps to create a figure-eight for added support.

Rigid braces – Often called a stir-up style brace with hard plastic sides and velcro straps to wrap around for a more secure custom fit. They often have enteral padding and can be filled with air for better comfort and support or gel for hot/cold therapy.  These braces are more for post injury and are not recommended to be used while playing sports.  However they  do aid in the initial healing process. Once an ankle injury has healed, it is common to graduate to wearing a lace up ankle for  prevention of future injuries.

When you first receive your ankle brace:

It is suggested to check the fit, comfort and support before wearing your  brace for a long period of time. After reading the specific directions for your brace, place it on your ankle and walk around a bit.  Also be sure to test your ankle brace out with the shoe that you will be wearing with your brace over the course of treatment.  You want your ankle and foot to feel secure and comfortable.
